Research and Development Chemist

Background

• Works under general direction of the Lab Director in a c-GMP regulated manufacturing environment operating under Q7A standards
• Broad responsibility to perform duties that assess feasibility of producing new chemicals; define new plant processes; solve existing chemical production issues (quality, rate, processing alternatives, raw materials); and, develop reliable analytical test methods

Tasks

• Interface with, instruct and learn from, production and project engineers, sales and marketing, customers and quality control chemists
• Observe lab and plant scale reactions, infer and deduce from those reactions optimal process design, labor savings and cost savings
• Develop hypotheses, design experiments to test those hypotheses, conduct experiments and observe the results of the experimentation
• Form conclusions from their experimentation and might develop new hypotheses for further testing; deduce or infer from that data, proper stoichiometry and concentration, process sequence, raw materials and process equipment
• Develop and analyze prototype samples for customer evaluation by processes that can be conducted on a plant scale; anticipate and resolve issues that might negatively affect plant introduction or product quality; assess processing and raw materials cost
• Translate concepts and ideas into concise concrete production practice, understandable instructions, analytical test methods and research reports; participate in plant introduction (in-process testing, concurrent process simulations, laboratory completion of in-process batches)
• Search literature and apply that information to resolution of research topics; use of imagination to generate novel ideas or applications to the resolution of process issue

Specifications

• D. in Chemistry or related field
• Seven (7) years of scientific experience
• Knowledge of:
  • Theories, principles, methods and procedures of research chemistry (Expert level)
  • Mathematics and statistics (Expert level)
  • Plant equipment, reaction chemistry, analytical chemistry , crystallization techniques, lab-to-plant scale-up and product quality
  • MS Office software package

• Skill in:
  • Working effectively and efficiently on multiple projects at once
  • Working effectively in a team environment, including in-depth collaboration between production and process divisions
  • Responding to rapidly changing demands
• Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing (including documenting research methods, results and conclusions)
