Process Controls Technician

Position: Full time

Overview

  • Works under general supervision of the Engineering Manager in a c-GMP regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Works as part of the Project Engineering Team to design, oversee construction, and startup the electrical components of Capital Projects
  • Works with Production and Engineers and Line Operators to provide day-to-day support of the control system components for the production facility
  • This is an on-site position with 0% Travel requirements

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Work closely with engineers, electricians, operators and others during all phases of projects from conception through commissioning
  • Create and modify PLC and HMI programs
  • Work with production to resolve control system and instrumentation issues.
  • Design, implement, maintain and improve control system architecture, software, instrumentation, and networking equipment for chemical manufacturing plant
  • Purchase equipment from vendors
  • Assist with the electrical construction installation and configuration of control devices
  • Review technical drawings and specifications of electrical equipment and ensure that installations conform to standards
  • Investigate operational complaints, determine nature and extent of problems and recommend remedial measures (be an effective troubleshooter)
  • Keep abreast of new technology developments to achieve best practices and improve and optimize new and existing control systems
  • Operate AutoCAD design software to design and draw panel layouts, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams

Requirements

  • Degree or Certificate in Control Systems Technology or similar program and/or experience
  • Experience:
    • Required:
      • Internship/work experience in a manufacturing facility
    • Preferred:
      • 2-5 years working in Manufacturing or Control Systems-related field
  • Knowledge of:
    • Required:
      • Principles, methods and knowledge of electrical systems and PLC controls
      • Knowledge of 4-20 mA and 120VAC control circuits and troubleshooting experience
      • Effective application of NFPA 70 (National Electric Code) standards
      • Some experience with computer programming (any language)
      • Knowledge of Electrical Drawings (panel layouts, motor schematics, wiring diagrams)
      • Chemical Plant or Manufacturing experience
    • Preferred:
      • Knowledge of P&IDs
      • Experience with PLC and/or DCS and HMI software
      • AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical (basic level)
      • Plant 3D experience (basic level)

  • Skill in:
    • Working effectively and efficiently on multiple projects at the same time
    • Effective at following and helping to establish standardized documentation
    • Working effectively in a team environment, including collaboration between manufacturing, maintenance and engineering groups
    • Responding to rapidly changing demands

  • Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing
    • Develop creative solutions to problems
    • Meet deadlines
    • Exercise judgment while being insightful, logical and methodical
    • Perform field investigations and provide recommendations
    • Maintain a proactive and positive attitude
