ICP-MS Chemist

Background

  • Works under general administrative direction of the Lab Director in a c-GMP regulated manufacturing environment operating under Q7A standards.
  • Employees in positions at this level of the series function as ICP-MS technical support for plant processes, customer and regulatory audits. As such, employees work on teams with chemists, process engineers, project engineers, analysts, quality, marketing and regulatory staff to implement improved processes and educate internal and external customers

Tasks

  • Serve as technical consultant to a research coordinator, sales and marketing by assisting in the development of research objectives and analytical pathways
  • Perform initial analysis and interpretation of test results; designate valid test data; assign theoretical relationships to other findings within the project and assist in the development of sequential experimentation by evaluating relevant material abstracted from scientific journals and other sources
  • Train chemists, engineers and sales staff in the application and analytical concepts of ICP-MS
  • Train analysts in the use of ICP-MS
  • Maintains the ICP-MS in top-flight operational condition
  • Develop methods for ICP-MS analysis
  • Assess customer trace metals specifications against product performance
  • Conduct ICP-MS method validation studies and constructs validation documents
  • Conduct ICP-MS studies of detection and quantitation limits
  • Work with quality control procedures and established tolerances as necessary and desirable
  • Conduct advanced stages of experimentation which require independent application of methods and procedures for which precedents may not exist
  • Provide coverage and input for resolution of problems in support of off-site trials
  • Write research methods, results and conclusions for publication; may present at professional conferences
  • Defend ICP-MS results when challenged by customers in quality complaints
  • Participate as an investigation team member in Quality Assurance investigations of out-of-specifications results
  • Support regulatory and customer audits by maintaining ICP-MS instrument calibration and maintenance logs
  • May supervise subordinate personnel in their performance of research and ICP-MS related duties; assign work, review work for accuracy and completeness and evaluate performance
  • Provide professional guidance to staff to improve research skills and to increase their understanding of techniques
  • Provide professional guidance to staff to improve research skills and to increase their understanding of techniques and procedures utilized; may instruct personnel in more advanced aspects of the research project
  • May oversee plant start-ups in support of market and product development
  • Maintain and enhance site safety
  • May perform work related to the next lower level in this series as needed

Specifications

  • MS Chemistry or related technical field that included instrumentation
  • 10 years of professional level chemist experience, at least five (5) years in spectroscopy
  • May require willingness to work evenings and weekend hours
  • Knowledge of:
    • Theories, principles, methods and procedures of research chemistry, including ICP-MS spectroscopy and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis (Expert level)
    • Method development and method validation (Expert level)
    • Mathematics and statistics (Extensive level)
    • Basic analytical laboratory equipment
    • MS Office software package
  • Skill in:
    • Working effectively and efficiently on multiple projects at once
    • Working effectively in a team environment
    • Responding to rapidly changing demands
  • Ability to:
    • Supervise, train and/or coordinate the activities of subordinates involved in research technology activities
    • Follow compendia and other test methods
    • Develop creative solutions to complex research procedural problems
    • Design and manage projects
    • Identify, gather, process and record data accurately
    • Maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards
    • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing (including documenting research methods, results and conclusions)
